Katie Hilborn

Founder

Compass Rose International’s story is deeply personal—rooted in the life of its founder, Katie Hilborn. Born to a mother with severe mental illness, Katie was abandoned as a newborn but was adopted by a loving family who helped her reach her full potential. This early experience of resilience and being given a second chance fueled Katie’s passion to help children realize their potential and overcome challenges.

At 20, Katie watched her birth mother die from multiple sclerosis, confined to a wheelchair. That moment confronted her with the fragility of life and the precociousness of time, igniting a deep sense of urgency. She embarked on a quest to discover her purpose in the world and to find ways to leave it more beautiful than she found it.

2011: Foundation of a Mission

In 2011, that passion took her to the remote valleys of Nepal, where she volunteered with children. There, she uncovered a startling truth: 85% of the children in orphan homes had living parents, according to UNICEF. Determined to make a change, Katie launched her first initiative—Global Orphan Prevention- providing sustainable income opportunities like goats and buffalo to widowed and abandoned mothers to keep families together.

2015: Responding to Nepal’s Earthquakes

In 2015, a devastating earthquake struck Nepal, leaving destruction and chaos in its wake. Amid this crisis, Katie Hilborn crossed paths with Dr. Laxmi Tamang—a serendipitous meeting that felt guided by fate. Laxmi, named after the Hindu goddess of fortune, embodied strength and determination, carrying the legacy of her father, a Gorkha soldier renowned for his bravery and resilience.

As Katie arrived in Nepal, she learned that her name in Nepali—"Katie" meaning "Girl" and her surname "Hilborn" translating to "from the Hill"—resonated deeply with the local culture. This realization, combined with the fortuitous meeting with Laxmi, felt like a sign that she was exactly where she was meant to be.

Together, Katie and Dr. Laxmi teamed up to deliver aid to remote Himalayan villages deep within the impact zone, ensuring vital support reached the hardest-hit areas of the Nuwakot District. During their work, they uncovered an elaborate child trafficking ring led by local politicians selling girls to Indian brothels.

This shocking discovery became a defining moment. Katie, Dr. Laxmi, and a newly formed village development committee that included local businessman KarmaJit Tamang, moved swiftly to respond. They established the Girls INpowerment Center & Dormitory—a sanctuary providing education, self-development, and self-defense, empowering girls to reclaim their futures and protect themselves from exploitation.

As the center’s impact grew, so did its reach. Economic development projects flourished, local businesses emerged, and vocational training programs supported the community of 3,000. A focused response to a crisis became a holistic, community-wide initiative.

2021: Colorado Expansion for Mental Wellness

By 2021, we rebranded the Global Orphan Prevention to Compass Rose International and the mission expanded to Colorado United States, where rising teen suicide rates highlighted a lack of mental health support in schools. Katie, drawing on her own childhood experiences and time as a teacher, saw many young women seeking validation externally.

Compass Rose International responded with bringing on a team of PhDs, parents, and teens to develop a curriculum around a lucid dreaming technique to help girls access their subconscious minds and internal guidance systems—a central element of the Compass Rose Curriculum, now taught in both Colorado and Nepal.

Compass Rose International is a global movement driven by the belief that every girl has an inner compass guiding her toward her True North. From Nepal’s valleys to Colorado’s peaks, the organization is dedicated to INpowering girls with the tools and confidence they need to navigate life’s challenges and shape their own futures. True INpowerment comes from within.

Our programming is rooted in the Compass Rose and IN-powerment philosophy

COMPASS ROSE
A compass rose represents the process of recalibrating a compass from magnetic north to true north. As the Earth’s poles constantly shift, this adjustment is essential no matter where you are or the time of year. Similarly, in our own lives, finding and realigning with our true north—a reflection of our values, purpose, and direction—is an ongoing journey. It’s a reminder that growth and self-discovery are lifelong processes, requiring us to pause, reflect, and adjust course as needed.
